The Balkans: Europe’s Best Kept Secret

The Balkans remain one of the continent's most fascinating regions, where centuries of history, diverse cultures, dramatic landscapes and warm hospitality combine to create a journey unlike any other. While visitors flock to Western Europe's famous capitals, the countries of the Balkans offer something increasingly rare: authenticity, discovery and the feeling of travelling somewhere genuinely different.

Our Balkans tour explores six remarkable countries before concluding with a relaxing seven-night cruise along Croatia's spectacular Adriatic coastline.

In Serbia, history and culture meet vibrant city life. Rich in history and renowned for its cuisine, Serbia offers beautiful architecture, fascinating stories and welcoming locals. Visits to historic cities including Petrovaradin and Niš provide insight into a region that has long sat at the crossroads of Europe.

Romania is a country of legends and castles. We visit the famous Bran Castle, often associated with the Dracula story, while discovering the true history behind the myths. Beyond the legends, Romania reveals magnificent architecture, medieval towns and a landscape dotted with fortresses and castles that seem lifted from the pages of a storybook.

Bulgaria offers a fascinating blend of East and West. From the historic streets of Sofia and Plovdiv to the spiritual significance of Rila Monastery, travellers experience a country where cultures, religions and traditions have mingled for centuries. The result is a destination rich in history, architecture and unique local character.

Bosnia and Herzegovina remains one of Europe's most underrated destinations. Mountain ranges stretch across the landscape, creating vast open spaces and spectacular scenery. In Mostar, the iconic stone bridge arches gracefully over the Neretva River, while Sarajevo tells a compelling story of resilience, diversity and cultural heritage.

Montenegro may be small, but it delivers some of the most breathtaking scenery in Europe. The Bay of Kotor is often described as one of the world's most beautiful natural harbours, surrounded by dramatic mountains and historic coastal towns. The country's abundance of UNESCO-protected areas, deep canyons and pristine landscapes makes it a highlight of the journey.

The tour concludes in Croatia, beginning in the magnificent walled city of Dubrovnik. From here, we board our ship for a seven-night Adriatic cruise, exploring idyllic islands, crystal-clear waters and picturesque coastal towns. The journey finishes with visits to Split, the extraordinary Plitvice Lakes and Croatia's capital, Zagreb.

From medieval castles and UNESCO World Heritage sites to mountain landscapes, historic cities and the warm waters of the Adriatic, the Balkans offer a side of Europe that many travellers have yet to discover.

For those seeking something beyond the usual European itinerary, this remarkable region delivers history, beauty and surprises at every turn.

The size and composition of the tour party from tour leaders Annie, tour guides, and the travellers was very good. All about the same age and compatibility amongst the tour party was excellent.
