Tokyo is a city of contrasts. Neon lights and bustling crossings sit alongside peaceful shrines and quiet gardens. During our stay we visit iconic sights including Tokyo Tower, Meiji Jingu Shrine and Asakusa Kannon Temple, with time to wander Nakamise Street and soak up the atmosphere that makes the city so captivating.
One of the more memorable experiences is a visit to a sumo training session, offering a rare insight into one of Japan’s oldest and most respected traditions. It is these moments, the ones that offer a deeper understanding of a culture, that often stay with travellers long after the photographs are taken.
From Tokyo, we travel to the beautiful Mt Fuji region and the peaceful surroundings of Lake Kawaguchi. Here, Japan slows down a little. We visit Mt Fuji’s 5th Station, the crystal-clear Oshino Hakkai ponds and the remarkable Ichiku Kubota Art Museum, known for its extraordinary textile artistry and stunning setting.
We then board Mitsui Ocean Cruises for an eight-night cruise exploring Japan’s coastline, waterways and regional culture. Travelling by sea offers a different perspective entirely. There is something special about arriving into ports slowly, watching landscapes unfold from the deck and experiencing places connected by centuries of maritime history.
