The Balkans are one of Europe's most diverse and fascinating regions. Here, cultures, languages and traditions have intersected for centuries, creating a landscape rich in history, architecture and local character. Travelling through these countries offers the opportunity to explore places that remain less visited than many of Europe's better-known destinations, while discovering stories that have shaped the continent for generations.
Our journey begins by exploring six remarkable countries: Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Croatia. Along the way, we visit medieval towns, UNESCO World Heritage sites, mountain landscapes and vibrant cities, each reflecting the unique heritage of the region. From Serbia's historic cities of Petrovaradin and Niš to Romania's legendary Bran Castle, associated with the Dracula story, every destination offers its own perspective on Eastern Europe's rich past.
Bulgaria reveals another layer of the Balkans, where Eastern and Western influences meet in historic cities such as Sofia and Plovdiv and at the remarkable Rila Monastery. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, we visit Sarajevo and the picturesque city of Mostar, where the elegant stone bridge spanning the Neretva River has become one of the region's most recognisable landmarks.
Montenegro's dramatic coastline and mountain scenery provide another highlight of the journey. The Bay of Kotor, often described as Europe's southernmost fjord, is surrounded by medieval towns and steep mountains, while the country's remarkable natural landscapes include deep river canyons and a number of UNESCO-protected areas. Throughout the journey, there is time to enjoy local cuisine, learn about the region's diverse history and appreciate the distinct identity of each country we visit.
In Croatia, we explore the walled city of Dubrovnik before boarding MS San Spirito, our home for the next seven nights. Travelling aboard a small ship allows us to unpack once while cruising the Adriatic's sheltered waters, visiting islands and coastal towns including Slano, Mljet National Park, Korčula, Biševo, Vis, Hvar, Trogir and Split. Along the way, there is time to swim in sheltered bays, stroll through historic ports and enjoy the relaxed rhythm of life on the Adriatic. Comfortable cabins, attentive service, locally inspired cuisine and included shore excursions make the cruise a memorable part of the journey.
Our tour concludes with visits to Split, the remarkable Plitvice Lakes National Park and Croatia's capital, Zagreb. Combining historic cities, mountain landscapes, coastal villages and an Adriatic cruise, this itinerary offers a thoughtful introduction to one of Europe's most rewarding regions, where history, culture and natural beauty come together in every destination.
