China & the Yangtze River

Ancient palaces stand beneath soaring skylines, traditional gardens sit beside bustling commercial districts, and centuries-old customs continue to shape everyday life. Travelling through China offers an opportunity to experience one of the world's oldest continuous civilisations while witnessing the energy of a nation that continues to evolve.

Our journey begins in Beijing, China's capital and political heart for centuries. Here, grand imperial landmarks, expansive public squares and historic temples reveal the story of dynasties that shaped the nation. Walking through the Forbidden City and standing beneath the iconic gates of Tiananmen Square provides a fascinating introduction to China's rich cultural heritage, while nearby sections of the Great Wall showcase one of history's most remarkable engineering achievements.

In Xi'an, the past comes vividly to life with a visit to the extraordinary Terracotta Warriors. Buried for more than 2,000 years, this vast army of life-sized figures remains one of the world's greatest archaeological discoveries. Beyond the warriors, Xi'an offers ancient city walls, bustling markets and a glimpse into the important role the city played as the eastern gateway to the Silk Road.

No visit to China would be complete without experiencing Shanghai, where historic architecture along the Bund stands opposite the striking skyline of Pudong. The city's blend of old and new reflects modern China itself—deeply connected to its past while embracing innovation, commerce and contemporary life. Elegant colonial buildings, peaceful gardens and vibrant shopping districts all contribute to Shanghai's unique character.

One of the highlights of the tour is a four-night cruise aboard the MV Century Paragon along the mighty Yangtze River. As China's longest river winds through the spectacular Three Gorges, dramatic cliffs rise above the water and traditional villages appear along the shoreline. Cruising provides a relaxed way to appreciate one of China's most celebrated landscapes while enjoying the comfort of a first-class river ship.

Combining ancient history, remarkable engineering, vibrant cities and breathtaking natural scenery, this journey offers a comprehensive introduction to China. From imperial capitals and archaeological treasures to the peaceful beauty of the Yangtze, it is a tour that reveals the many layers of one of the world's most fascinating destinations.
