While Elaine’s group has been exploring Kazakhstan, Jacky and her travellers have just begun their Heart of the Silk Road journey in Kyrgyzstan.
Their first stop was Bishkek, the country’s largest city. A place of striking contrasts, Bishkek blends large Soviet-era buildings with surprisingly leafy boulevards, open parks and pedestrian-friendly streets.
After time to recover from the journey from New Zealand, the group enjoyed a welcome dinner accompanied by a traditional folklore performance. The musicians were incredibly talented and offered a wonderful introduction to Kyrgyz culture and traditions.
Jacky sent this update from the road:
"Our first stop on tour was Bishkek, the largest city in Kyrgyzstan. It is a city of contrasts — large Soviet-style buildings with ornate interiors, surrounded by tree-lined boulevards and green spaces.
After a relaxing day to recover from the journey from NZ, we enjoyed a welcome dinner and folklore show. The musicians were incredibly talented and gave us a great insight into their culture and traditions.
On day two our local guide led a walking tour of the city, including Victory Square, the Manas and Independence monuments, and Ala Too Square where we watched the changing of the Guard of Honour ceremony. After lunch we had time to browse the Museum of Applied Arts and admire the beautiful traditional crafts."
Two Maher groups travelling through Central Asia at the same time — each experiencing their own moments along the Silk Road.
