Australia’s Great Rail Journeys

Australia by rail, the pace encourages you to settle in, watch the landscape change outside your window and appreciate the vastness of the country in a way that few other forms of travel allow. This tour brings together three of Australia's most celebrated rail journeys, combined with time to explore some of the country's most distinctive destinations.

The adventure begins in Perth before boarding the Indian Pacific for the three-day journey across the Nullarbor to Adelaide. Travelling in Gold Service, guests enjoy comfortable private cabins, restaurant dining and access to the Outback Explorer Lounge while watching Australia's landscapes gradually transform from the Indian Ocean to the plains of South Australia. The journey itself is every bit as memorable as the destinations along the way.

From Adelaide, we board The Ghan, one of the world's great rail journeys. Travelling north through the heart of Australia, the route passes the vineyards of South Australia, the vast Red Centre, Alice Springs and the changing landscapes of the Northern Territory before arriving in tropical Darwin. Gold Service includes all meals, beverages and a selection of off-train experiences, making the journey both comfortable and immersive.

After time exploring Darwin, including a city tour and harbour dinner cruise, we continue to tropical North Queensland. Port Douglas provides the perfect base to experience the Great Barrier Reef, Cape Tribulation and the ancient Daintree Rainforest, while Cairns offers another perspective on the region with a journey aboard the Kuranda Scenic Railway and Skyrail, as well as a visit to the Australian Armour & Artillery Museum.

Our final rail experience is aboard the Spirit of Queensland, travelling from Cairns to Brisbane in comfortable RailBed seating that converts into a lie-flat bed for overnight travel. Along the way, Queensland's coastline, farming districts and regional towns unfold beyond the window, providing a fitting conclusion to this remarkable rail adventure.

Throughout the tour there is time to experience many of Australia's most celebrated destinations, including Rottnest Island, Darwin, Port Douglas, Cairns and Brisbane. Combining three iconic rail journeys with coastal scenery, tropical landscapes and unforgettable experiences, this itinerary offers a unique way to discover the scale and diversity of Australia.

The size and composition of the tour party from tour leaders Annie, tour guides, and the travellers was very good. All about the same age and compatibility amongst the tour party was excellent.
