Antarctica is unlike anywhere else on Earth. A place of immense glaciers, sculptured icebergs and snow-covered mountains, it is one of the last true wildernesses, where nature continues much as it has for thousands of years. Visiting Antarctica is less about ticking off another destination and more about experiencing a landscape that few people have the opportunity to see for themselves.
Our expedition travels to the Antarctic Peninsula during March, the final weeks of the Antarctic summer. At this time of year, wildlife is abundant. Gentoo penguin chicks are beginning to explore the shoreline and venture into the water, humpback whales are feeding before their long migration north, and leopard seals can often be heard during their breeding season. Every day offers the possibility of remarkable wildlife encounters, whether from the ship, on shore, or while exploring by Zodiac.
Travelling through Antarctica is an experience shaped by the weather, sea and ice. No two expeditions are ever the same. Icebergs drift with the currents, glaciers calve into the sea and wildlife appears when least expected. Zodiac cruises and shore landings allow guests to step onto the continent itself, while optional kayaking offers another perspective, gliding quietly amongst ice floes in one of the world's most extraordinary environments.
Our home throughout the voyage is Atlas World Navigator, a luxury expedition ship purpose-built for polar exploration. Carrying just 198 guests, the ship combines the atmosphere of an intimate yacht with the strength and technology required to safely navigate Antarctica's icy waters. Elegant accommodation, exceptional dining and spacious observation areas ensure there is always a comfortable place to watch the ever-changing scenery unfold.
One of the pleasures of travelling aboard a smaller expedition vessel is the opportunity to spend more time experiencing the destination. Expert expedition leaders accompany every landing and Zodiac excursion, sharing their knowledge of Antarctica's wildlife, geology, history and environment while helping guests gain a deeper understanding of this remarkable continent.
Antarctica is often described as the journey of a lifetime. Its immense landscapes, remarkable wildlife and sense of isolation are difficult to convey in photographs alone. Experiencing the White Continent firsthand offers a rare opportunity to witness one of the world's last great wildernesses in the company of experienced expedition guides and fellow travellers who share a spirit of curiosity and adventure.
