Discover Japan During Cherry Blossom Season

Japan in spring offers one of the world's most anticipated natural spectacles. As cherry blossom trees begin to flower across the country, parks, temples and riverbanks are transformed by delicate shades of pink and white. Known as sakura, the blossoms have been celebrated in Japan for centuries and remain an important part of Japanese culture. Families, friends and colleagues gather beneath the trees for hanami, taking time to enjoy the changing season and appreciate the fleeting beauty of the blossoms.

Our journey begins in Tokyo, a city where centuries-old temples sit comfortably alongside soaring skyscrapers and vibrant neighbourhoods. We explore many of the capital's best-known landmarks, including Meiji Jingu Shrine, Asakusa Kannon Temple, Nakamise Street and Tokyo Tower, while also gaining a fascinating insight into one of Japan's oldest traditions with a visit to a sumo training session.

Leaving the city behind, we travel towards the iconic Mt. Fuji region. The views across Lake Kawaguchiko towards Japan's highest mountain are among the country's most recognisable landscapes. We also visit the peaceful Oshino Hakkai ponds and the Ichiku Kubota Art Museum before continuing into the Japanese Alps. Here, Takayama's beautifully preserved Edo-period streets and the traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses of Shirakawago provide a glimpse into rural Japan and a way of life that has endured for generations.

In Kanazawa, we explore one of Japan's finest landscape gardens, Kenroku-en, along with the historic samurai district and the atmospheric Higashi Chaya geisha quarter. The journey then continues to Kyoto, the country's cultural heart, where ancient temples, tranquil gardens and traditional tea ceremonies reflect the customs and craftsmanship that have shaped Japanese life for centuries. A visit to the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest and the golden pavilion of Kinkakuji are among the many highlights.

Nearby Nara offers another perspective on Japan's heritage. Friendly free-roaming deer wander through expansive parklands surrounding Todaiji Temple, home to one of the world's largest bronze Buddha statues. Our journey concludes in Hiroshima, where Peace Memorial Park provides an opportunity to reflect on the city's history while also appreciating its remarkable recovery and vibrant modern character. Visits to Shukkeien Garden and the Hiroshima Prefectural Art Museum round out our exploration of this resilient city.

Blending bustling cities, mountain landscapes, historic towns and centuries-old traditions, this tour offers a thoughtful introduction to Japan at one of its most beautiful times of year. Travelling during cherry blossom season adds another dimension to the experience, as parks, castles and temples are framed by blossoms that have become an enduring symbol of spring and renewal throughout Japan.
