ON TOUR: The Great Wall and Imperial Beijing

As the Maher Tours journey through China draws closer to its conclusion, the group has experienced many of the country's most iconic landmarks, each offering a fascinating glimpse into China's rich history and cultural heritage.

In Beijing, the group visited the vast Tiananmen Square, one of the world's largest public squares and a place that has played a significant role in China's modern history. From there, they stepped through the gates of the magnificent Forbidden City, the sprawling imperial palace that served as the home of emperors and the centre of Chinese power for nearly 500 years.

Another highlight was the beautiful Summer Palace, once a retreat for emperors and their families. Today, its lakes, pavilions, gardens and walkways remain wonderfully preserved, offering visitors a peaceful escape from the bustle of the city while showcasing the elegance of imperial Chinese design.

Of course, no visit to China would be complete without experiencing the Great Wall. Walking even a small section of this extraordinary structure is a powerful reminder of the scale and ambition of one of the world's greatest engineering achievements. For many in the group, standing on the wall and looking out across the surrounding hills was a true bucket-list moment.

The group also visited the Temple of Heaven, where emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties once came to worship and pray for good harvests. Its striking architecture and cultural significance make it one of Beijing's most treasured landmarks.

Adding a modern contrast to these ancient sites was a visit to Beijing's famous Olympic Stadium, a symbol of China's contemporary achievements and its place on the world stage.

While the grand landmarks have been unforgettable, some of the group's favourite moments have come on the water. Throughout the journey, the many boat cruises and scenic waterways have provided a relaxing and unique perspective on China's landscapes and daily life.

One particular highlight was a boat trip on the beautiful West Lake in Hangzhou. Surrounded by willow trees, historic pagodas and peaceful scenery, it is easy to understand why this UNESCO World Heritage site has inspired poets, artists and travellers for centuries.

From imperial palaces and ancient temples to the Great Wall and tranquil lakes, this remarkable journey has showcased the many faces of China. It has been a tour filled with history, culture, friendship, wonderful food and unforgettable experiences.

The size and composition of the tour party from tour leaders Annie, tour guides, and the travellers was very good. All about the same age and compatibility amongst the tour party was excellent.
