ON TOUR: China Pandas, Warriors and Ancient Wonders

May 2026

The Maher Tours China adventure continues, and the group has enjoyed some of the country's most iconic and memorable experiences.

A visit to Chongqing Zoo provided a delightful opportunity to meet one of China's most beloved national treasures, the giant panda. Watching these gentle and often playful animals up close was a highlight for many travellers. Whether munching bamboo, climbing or simply relaxing, the pandas certainly lived up to their reputation for being irresistibly cute.

From Chongqing, the journey continued to Xi'an, one of China's oldest cities and the starting point of the ancient Silk Road. Rich in history and culture, Xi'an offers a fascinating glimpse into China's imperial past.

The standout attraction was undoubtedly the incredible Terracotta Warriors. Standing face-to-face with these life-sized soldiers and horses is an experience that is difficult to describe. Created to guard the tomb of Emperor Qin Shi Huang, China's first emperor, the warriors remained hidden underground for more than 2,000 years.

Their discovery in 1974 by local farmers digging a well is now regarded as one of the greatest archaeological finds of the twentieth century. Preserved beneath layers of earth and timber, thousands of warriors, horses and chariots have since been uncovered, each with remarkably unique features and expressions.

The group was also treated to a wonderful Tang Dynasty Dinner and Cultural Show, providing an insight into one of the most prosperous and influential periods in Chinese history. The evening combined delicious local cuisine with colourful costumes, music, dance and storytelling, bringing the traditions of ancient China vividly to life.

From giant pandas to ancient warriors, every day is revealing a new side of this remarkable country. The journey continues, but Xi'an has already delivered memories for our group!

The size and composition of the tour party from tour leaders Annie, tour guides, and the travellers was very good. All about the same age and compatibility amongst the tour party was excellent.
