The Balkans are full of contrast and character, where medieval towns sit alongside dramatic mountain scenery, cultures and religions have intertwined for centuries, and each country brings its own distinct identity, traditions and history. It is a region that surprises many travellers, not because it is flashy or overdone, but because it feels authentic, welcoming and rich in stories.
Our Discover the Balkans journey takes us through Bosnia & Herzegovina, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Montenegro and Croatia before finishing with a relaxing seven-night Adriatic cruise along Croatia’s stunning coastline.
Throughout the journey there are countless moments that remind you just how layered this part of the world really is. In Serbia, we explore historic cities such as Petrovaradin and Niš, where centuries of history are reflected in grand fortresses, churches and lively town squares. Serbian hospitality is warm and genuine, and the food is hearty, generous and full of flavour.

Romania offers a fascinating blend of legend and history. We visit the famous Dracula’s Castle and learn more about the real stories that inspired the myths, while also discovering beautifully preserved medieval towns, impressive castles and architecture that feels untouched by time.
Bulgaria is another highlight, with its mix of rugged mountain landscapes, elegant cities and deep cultural heritage. Places such as Sofia, Plovdiv and the Rila region reveal the strong blend of Eastern and Western influences that have shaped the country over generations. From ancient churches and monasteries to vibrant local markets and relaxed cafés, Bulgaria has a rhythm all of its own.
Bosnia & Herzegovina is often one of the countries travellers know the least about before arriving, yet it leaves a lasting impression. The scenery is spectacular, with rugged mountains and river valleys stretching across the countryside, while cities like Sarajevo and Mostar offer powerful insight into the region’s complex history. Standing beside Mostar’s famous bridge and wandering through the old town gives a real sense of the resilience and spirit of the people who call this region home.
Montenegro may be one of Europe’s smallest countries, but its scenery is remarkable. Mountains rise sharply from the coastline, ancient towns sit tucked into sheltered bays, and the Bay of Kotor is one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline anywhere in the Adriatic. It is easy to see why Montenegro has become increasingly popular with travellers looking for somewhere a little different.
The final part of the journey takes us to Croatia, beginning in the beautiful walled city of Dubrovnik before we board our ship for a seven-night Adriatic cruise. After the pace of travelling by land, this part of the tour offers time to slow down and simply enjoy the experience of sailing along the coast, swimming in crystal-clear water, visiting island towns and soaking up the relaxed atmosphere of the Adriatic.
Before heading home, we finish with a visit to the breathtaking Plitvice Lakes National Park and Croatia’s elegant capital, Zagreb.
What makes the Balkans so memorable is the combination of history, scenery and genuine local connection. It is a region where every border crossed brings a slightly different perspective, where cultures overlap in fascinating ways, and where travellers often come away feeling they have experienced a side of Europe that still feels refreshingly real.
