There’s something wonderfully nostalgic about seeing Australia by rail, watching the landscape slowly unfold beyond the window while the rhythm of the train sets the pace of the journey.
For our guide Annie and her group, both the Indian Pacific and The Ghan have been standout experiences, and very much loved by the group. From the vast open spaces of the outback to the changing colours of the countryside, the journey itself has been just as memorable as the destinations along the way.
In Darwin, the group enjoyed a sunset cruise, taking in the warm evening air and tropical atmosphere as the day faded into night. Further over in Cairns, visits to the gardens and butterfly sanctuary were another highlight, offering a quieter chance to enjoy the colour and beauty of the region.
Like all travel, there are occasionally unexpected changes along the way. A rail strike meant the planned train journey from Cairns to Brisbane became a flight instead, but the group adapted well and continued travelling smoothly.
Throughout the tour, Annie says the hotels have been excellent, with welcoming staff who have helped make the journey easy and enjoyable from place to place.
Most of all, the tour has been filled with good company, shared experiences and the simple pleasure of travelling together through some of Australia’s most iconic landscapes.
